starry snow

9 Dec

Santa Con is an annual rite of passage for the revelers of all things fun in San Francisco (and around the world), and I am excited to rock my $14.99 Walgreens Santa suit in all of its glory, have some champagne in my orange juice on Saturday morning (OK orange juice in my champagne) and go dance my face off with a thousand or so of my closest friends throughout the streets and bars of this fine city, immersed in a sea of red and white. It is hard not to be jolly in a Santa suit… this holiday brings out the best in everyone.

Today’s Emo: Devil’s Work / Miike Snow

‘my hands, I feel like I’ve been here before’

Miike Snow has given us all an early Christmas gift for being good boys and girls… a new song from their upcoming album, and it is exactly what I wanted this year. I didn’t realize just how much I missed their signature squiggly synth until I got a fresh taste of it. This is a song that just keeps giving. #emo

Today’s Untz: Starry Eyed / Ellie Goulding (Russ Chimes remix)

‘next thing we’re touching’

A throw back: I hearted this song on Hypem back on November 20th, 2010, but I am on a serious Ellie Goulding kick, and this remix is worth a revisit. I am still kicking myself for hearing MGMT at Outside Lands (despite numerous warnings that their live performances leave much to be desired) instead of seeing the golden haired English songbird tear up Sutro Stage. You live and you learn. #untz

save my body

27 May

Great indie band name ideas: Cuddle Wars. Airplane Breakfast. Sleeper Car.  Slow Feather. Kitten Brigade. Lazy Panda.

You heard it here first. I am off to Vegas, signing out til Wednesday. Happy Memorial Day weekend!

Today’s Emo: My Body / Young the Giant (Two Door Cinema Club remix)

‘my body tells me no / but I wont quit ’cause I want more / ’cause I want more

My Body offers an apropos selection of lyrics before I head off to dance my face off in the desert to both Tiesto and Deadmau5. What a weekend ahead of me… I am not as young as I used to be. Funky fun Two Door beats plus smoking Young the Giant vocals makes for the perfect Friday-before-a-three-day-weekend-of-revelry indie jam. Rinse and repeat, cause I want more. #emo

Today’s Untz: Til Silvia Saves the World / Kap Slap (Swedish House Mafia vs. Miike Snow vs. Britney Spears)

‘watch me move when I lose / when I lose it hard’

Toss Swedish House Mafia, Miike Snow, and the ex-queen of pop in a blender and the result is this play inducing mash up dripping in sugar, best served in a red Solo cup. Til Silvia Saves the World  sounds like it came straight from the strobe lit floors of Bootie SF. A delightful mix of lots of oooh oooh and uh uh uh noises and clever plays of layering vocals (‘who’s going to save the world tonight’ / ‘we’ll keep dancing til the world ends‘)…. I am guiltily drinking it up. #untz

save the cat

27 Apr

Stumbled onto open mic night Tuesdays at Red Devil Lounge due to making drunk friends with a local musician last weekend. Will not miss another… and not just because the crowd was 90% male in plaid. I forgot how lucky I am to live in a big city – it was like a high school talent show for grown ups. Very talented grown ups.

Today’s Emo: I Found a Reason / Cat Power

‘what comes is better than what came before’

I popped an old mixed CD in the Honda last weekend while driving to Los Gatos with my sister and was taken by this almost forgotten subtle Cat Power cover of Velvet Underground that had been gathering dust. There is not much too it – the track clocks in at about 2 minutes and is simple at best, but CP’s version of I Found a Reason is the kind of song that instantly puts you at ease and makes you want to curl up into something (or someone).

I caught Cat Power (less fun non-stage name Chan Marshall) live at a Bridge School Concert a few years back and I don’t remember her being particularly stunning in terms of presence –I think she struggles with stage fright. Still, her voice is enough to carry her… smoky, sultry and sweet without being gooey. Female vocals at their finest, perfect midweek chill sesh. #emo

Today’s Untz: Save the World Tonight / Swedish House Mafia

‘turn up the love now/ listen up now/ turn up the love’

SHM released a new track this week featuring the vocal prowess of John Martin of Miike Snow and I am shamelessly floored. This delightful untz drips of boy band and makes me want to dance like fifteen year old me wanted to dance to N’Sync.

I love the piano break, love the oooh-oooooh echos for singalong like in Kings of Leon’s Use Somebody (favorite karoke song), love that this epic euro untz is somehow earnest amidst all the cheese. Can always count on Pete Tong / BBC Radio 1 to put magic like this on the airwaves.

Oooh-oooooh. #untz

sky germany

23 Feb

I took Monday’s holiday as a holiday from the blog, as I spent too much of the weekend playing to type anything up. My friend Alex was in town visiting from New York, and oh the trouble we found ourselves in after finishing a bottle of wine before even making it to dinner on Friday night. Accordingly, a couple more chill Wednesday tracks to balance out my inner untz and emo.

Today’s Emo: Animal (Miike Snow cover) / Sky Ferreira

in your eyes I see the eyes of somebody who could be strong, tell me if I’m wrong / now I’m pulling your disguise up / are you free or are you tied up

Sky Ferriera is a hot mess of an 18 year old from LA who has a background in gospel and the voice of a slightly devious angel. I came across her lighthearted first single, 17, last year and while I was impressed with her pipes and those pouty lips, I was left uninspired by the song itself… perhaps because I am no longer sneaking around using a fake ID (‘mom and dad don’t understand / she got so many older friends‘). Then I came across the young Ferreira’s slow take on Miike Snow’s anthem Animal and got chills. Who knew this song could be so pretty? The girl has a stunning voice projecting some serious soul for her age and this is one of my favorite covers… ever.

Sky has an EP set for release on March 22nd, and if she can find the proper backdrop for her talent, she could bypass the whole pop tart route altogether. From what I have sampled it sounds like she still has a way to go, so until she matures a bit I think her next move should just be covering the entire album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. Just imagine her take on Rome. #emo

Today’s Untz: Take Your Time / Germany Germany

I love the feeling of good fortune experienced from coming across a great song by an artist you haven’t heard before. I discovered this gentle untz track on Hypem and felt like I’d just stumbled across some bills on the sidewalk. Take Your Time rolls out layer upon layer of of dreamy synth and digital guitar cut with keys. Happiness in a sound cloud, I want to drink it up. Germany Germany is a Canadian dj named Drew Harris. He places his sound somewhere in between Crystal Castles and Postal Service (last Twitter update, ‘the district sleeps alone tonight’), and while the track is unique, I completely agree with his self categorization. A perfect blend of sounds, listen to Take Your Time a few times and try not to smile. #untz
