strfkr lament

18 May

Two posts in two days feels a bit like pulling a double rainbow, but it is nice to get back on track, and there is music to be shared, even if it is occasionally squeezed in before meetings.

I was listening to songs and reading through a few older posts the other day, and realized there is scattered bitter sentiment about being trapped in the corporate jungle from time to time on TUATE.  Yesterday was my one-year anniversary at my job, and as much as my nature may occasionally fight being prescribed to a 9-5+ day, “reaching out” and exhausted, computer screen poisoned eyes, it has been a really great year for me here overall. So occasional bitching and moaning aside, cheers to that.  And cheers to music for drowning out the bitching and moaning.

Today’s Emo:  Lament / Mount Moriah

‘if this will be anything / than let it be over’

Mount Moriah breathe some fresh North Carolinian air into the indie music scene, with a little bit country, a little bit rock and roll and lots of tambourine. The duo’s self titled debut album dropped April 12th, and I have enjoyed earfuls of  slightly rough but girly vocals and guitar laced melodies dripping of sweet Americana. #emo

Today’s Untz: Julius / Starfucker

‘picture your body / hearing your voice / fall into your eyes’

My favorite Portlandians just dropped a music video for one of the best tracks off their new album, Reptilians, and I have revisited and put on repeat. I have been dying to see Starfucker live since I caught the last few songs of their show at Rickshaw Stop a couple months back.

I will forever more call missing a show due to poorly timed arrival / miscalculation of door opening and opener set times as getting “starfucked” and will not let it happen again. Luckily STRFKR will be playing Outside Lands, so I can redeem myself come August. Might need to camp out outside GG park with the homeless the night before, just to be safe. #untz

star fetish

11 Mar

It’s the Friday before Saint Patrick’s Day which means a weekend of merriness, day drinking, beer that stains your teeth green and pinching. This will happen all over again on the actual Saint Patty’s day and then again the weekend after. So it goes. I am in the middle of reading Slaughterhouse-Five, and want to follow every thought with ‘so it goes.’

Today’s Emo: Death as a Fetish / Starfucker

I saw Starfucker play all of two songs Wednesday night thanks to totally miscalculating  when they would take the stage. During the majority of their show I was down the street drinking beer from a boot and eating delicious German food, killing time before their show. So it goes. I had the best kind of company, the two songs were good and as a consolation I got to meet the band/get my album signed. The boys look like babies so perhaps this is why they decided to play a headlining show at the Rickshaw Stop at nine pm. School night.

Death as a Fetish is surprisingly upbeat for having a morbid (if not kinky) title.  I’d like the sound to follow me around on a sunny weekend adventure somewhere warm and outdoors. I realize I originally introduced STRFKR as an untz, but their new album is decidedly more mellow than their earlier stuff. Reptilian, which is a slimy sounding title for an album with such smooth beats, is phenomenal – Passion Pit meets Miike Snow meets chill instrumental djs like Germany Germany.  Starfucked. #emo

Today’s Untz: Stars (LAZRtag remix) / The xx

and I can draw the line on the first date/ I’ll let you cross it / let you take every line I’ve got

The xx is one of my favorite bands, Stars is one of my favorite songs, and this is a stellar remix. The underlining theme of Stars takes you to a place that we’ve all been to– that dizzy feeling when you are hitting it off perfectly on a first date, your subsequent decision to not put out because you really like this person, and the inevitable allowance to lose yourself in the moment because Stars don’t shine for the very first time very often, and deserve to be celebrated. LAZRtag transforms the whispy song into something dance worthy and the beats at the end have a hint of Kaskade’s trance inducing sound. Celestial. #untz

cults and starfuckers

28 Jan
With this post The Untz and the Emo officially becomes non-child safe. It’s about time.

Today’s Emo: Go Outside / Cults

‘I really want to go out / I really want to go outside and stop to see your day / you really want to hole up / you really want to stay inside and sleep the light away’

I am a bit late on this train, but I came across Go Outside last month and was instantly won over by the track’s xylophone tings, warm childlike tone and simple premise (minus all that cult speak at the beginning). Per usual, I began scanning the interweb to figure out who Cults are, and after a couple detours into some seriously freaky satanic stuff, arrived at an answer. Pitchfork says Cults is comprised of two young film students living in New York who are dating each other and just started dabbling in producing music for fun one afternoon. I have those kinds of afternoons all the time…

The two unsigned lovers are now at work crafting a full album, and if it is anything like this, I can’t wait. Even pre-relesase, the duo has already garnered enough buzz to secure a coveted spot at Coachella this April. There. #emo

Today’s Untz: Bury Us Alive / Starfucker

Chill untz to ease into what is mapping out to be a fantastic weekend. Starfucker (family safe/stock ticker version of name is STRFKR) is an indie electro group from the best state on earth (Oregon) and just make me want to move, slowly, all the time. Love the soft vocals, love the trickling beats, love getting lost in this song. They have been around for a few years, but I only discovered them on Hypem a couple weeks ago and have been Starfucking quite a bit since.  I love that I can say that. The band temporarily tried to change its name to more NCA friendly Pyramiddd, but rightfully returned back to Starfucker last May.

Bury Us Alive is the first single off their upcoming album set for March 8th, a date they will just happen to be tearing up the Independent in SF. There, DMFO (dancing my face off). #untz
