shut the night out

22 Feb

I took Monday’s holiday is a blogiday, left the laptop at home and spent the day outside enjoying the splendors of San Francisco, ending it all with a sunset over the bay with a four legged friend. Now back to work, but with a little help from another friend, who guest wrote today’s Indie on Jhameel, one of the Bay Area’s own.

Today’s Indie: Shut Up / Jhameel  (guest post by Erik Eppel)

‘is it that I might have heard you shoot the pistol / like an animal you tear apart your prey and then kiss them’

I’d say I went to a concert Monday night, though, when this guy took the stage, the show assumed the character of a séance. Song after song, Jhameel channeled MJ’s ghost—bolstered not just a little by a totally reimagined “PYT”—into a frenetic trance that alternated between lyrics whispered with the sweaty passion of nude bodies in the dark and screamed with a spark that reminds us being human can, and perhaps always should, be wild and reckless. With contagious riffs, a bass line that charms hips like snakes, and yelping lyrics, “Shut Up” exemplifies Jhameel’s energy.

Scattered groups quickly coalesced into a single whistlin’, hootin’ and hollerin’ body at foot of the stage, and the high of the truly New coursed through the crowd’s veins as first one and then another concertgoer turned to a neighbor with the look of instant addiction.

Casting all metaphor aside, Jhameel simply blew me away. I cannot think of higher praise than love at first listen, and as I write this post the morning after, I’m nursing a terminal idiot crush formed in the furnace of Jhameel’s performance at Bottom of the Hill last night.

They say abuse stems from the impossible return to that first high; given how I’m already jonesin’ for another show and eager to confirm Jhameel–Live is a drug that delivers that virginal vertigo every time, it looks like I’m happily headed down that path. #indie from Erik

Today’s Untz: The Night Out / Martin Solveig (A-Trak remix)

‘how does it sound if we spend the night out’

I will be brief with my untz after Erik’s epic opus above: the original version of this song serves as the perfect soundtrack for a drive through the city, but A-Trak’s version (premiered on Fools Gold radio show this week) feels primed and ready for a crowded room of revelers. Revel on: a night out sounds great. #untz

whale trak

25 Apr

Spring brings our beloved national pastime back into play, and a slew of drunken revelers passing through the ally way outside my office on game days. I know the Giants are playing an afternoon game anytime there is in influx of weed clouds, brawling, or public urination beyond the usual mayhem that can occur any given weekday on the streets of SOMA.

While it is exciting to have National Champions in the backyard, I will miss last year’s random Wednesdays when I snagged last minute $11 bleacher seats, downed a few at 21st Amendment after work and slipped into a spontaneous, fun filled evening. Now it is buying tickets weeks ahead and dropping four times the cash. It feels a little bit like that bittersweet moment when your favorite up and coming band has arrived, and you can no longer stand front row at their concert and lock eyes dreamily with the bass player for less than a movie ticket. You are really happy for them, but they suddenly feel less accessible, less… yours.

Still, it is really ridiculous for me to complain, especially after many depressing years of being a Mariners fan. I went to my first game yesterday afternoon, and even though it was a heartbreaking 10th inning defeat, the beard is feared.

Today’s Emo: Golden /The Devil Whale

‘I thought I heard someone say a prayer / and the words felt stolen’

Another band name with whale in it, although I believe panda is still the most represented member of the animal kingdom in band and dj names these days. I discovered The Devil Whale while doing homework for an upcoming concert – they open for the Head and the Heart Wednesday night at The Bottom of the Hill. Pleasant vocals, swaying melodies, and tambourines, these guys will be the perfect way to start what is sure to be a heavenly emo evening. #emo

Today’s Untz: Heads Will Roll / The Yeah Yeah Yeahs (A-Trak remix)

glitter on the wet streets / silver over everything’

I found Skrillex a little too much dub to take with my cornflakes on Saturday morning of Coachella, so A-Trak was the first untz set that I really settled into. And by settle into I mean get epically unsettled dancing. The crowd went nuts for Barbara Streisand (A-Trak is 1/2 of Duck Sauce) but it was hearing his version of Heads Will Roll live that had me undone…. and not just because it made me think of the magical dance sequence on the Halloween episode of Glee. Great energy, great friends, great #untz

indestructible jet planes

31 Jan

I had a very untz and emo intensive weekend. Think underground dance party  til 4 a.m. on Friday and then a beautiful couple of days in the rolling hills of Napa with the new Cold War Kids album on repeat. Life is good. So are these songs.

Today’s Emo: Big Jet Plane / Angus and Julia Stone

‘she smelled of daisies / she drive me crazy’

Brother/sister acts weird me out a little bit in the same way the dads do on the e! reality television show ‘Toddlers in Tiaras.’  Something just feels a bit off. This hasn’t stopped me from loving Australian sibling duo Angus and Julia Stone ever since I heard sigh inducing Just a Boy a couple years ago. I like that this song keeps it simple. Gentle guitar rifts, calming vocals, subtle strings, and the idea of a sweet escape make Big Jet Plane the perfect sleepy Monday morning song. #emo

Today’s Untz: Indestructible (A-Trak Remix) / Robyn

‘and I never was smart with love / I let the bad ones in and the good ones go’

A-Trak borrows the violins from Robyn’s acoustic version of Indestructible and injects them into her dance track, and the result is untz genius. The strings remind me of a mixture between the shower scene of Psycho and the part of Romeo and Juliet where Leo is following Claire Danes through the costume party when they first meet, and they look at each other through the fish tank. Sharp urgency, just like Robyn’s lyrics. The remix kicks an already fantastic song up a notch, and just when things start to feel a little emo, A-Trak tosses in some crazy electro for the final minute.  This is hard core. #untz
