Today’s Untz: I Don’t Know Why / VOODOO FARM

VOODOO FARM has just released his brand new single ‘I Don’t Know Why’ off of “Hitsville U.S.A.” It’s a 4-track EP that combines classic soul samples with programmed synthesis and live instrumentation. Slated to drop: January 14, 2013.

Liam Dirlam, aka VOODOO FARM, has shifted into high gear with the release of his new EP. Having listened to the whole thing I can assure you it’s great from start to finish. 2013 looks to be a big year for this rising star. Below are  some song notes my buddy Liam sent me. Behind the scenes…

“At the end, you can hear my buddy Johnny BLK and I laughing– I decided to leave that in there so that I will always remember how exciting/fun this recording session was.  We dimmed the lights, fired up a few bowls, and sipped on black coffee for about 10 straight hours.  The two of us discussed various music from the 50s-70s, and tried to figure out how to channel that energy/warmth into this album.  I told Johnny I wanted the guitars on “I Don’t Know Why” to have the same emotion/feel as Eddie Hazel’s epic 10-minute solo in Funkadelic’s “Maggot Brain”.  Johnny then ripped through 2 completely improvised tracks which I later re-sampled and panned hard left/right in an attempt to re-create George Clinton’s mixing techniques on that same 1971 album.  Probably my favorite thing about this track is the way the guitars and saxophones (laid down by my buddy Matt Dolliver) sing to each other in different ears throughout the song.” -Liam

Today’s Untz – Grapevine (VOODOO FARM Remix) / Marvin Gaye

Liam Dirlam, aka VOODOO FARM, is the people’s freak who’s flown his flag higher than the rest us of who dream of doing so. Held down by the man he is not. His nine to five is trying to alleviate us from ours.

After years of over exposure to smoke machines, laser lights, beats, blunts, and chicks begging for his bodacious library of intergalactic tunes to be put into one solid mixtape, he has finally given in. Thanks the space lords for they are kind.

The song specifically featured here today is a remix of ‘Grapvine,’ the classic Marvin Gaye tune. It’s funky, it’s loose, it’s hard. It’s all you could want and more for a hard hitting remix. It also features live bass and guitar from our homie, Robert E Corrigan giving it that live organic feel while still overwhelmingly cosmic. Space bless us all.

You can find his entire mixtape here which features some original tracks as well as remixes of DVBBS, Notorious B.I.G., Whitney Houston, Florence and The Machine, and so on. The list is extensive and the tracks beautifully and melodically persuasive. Don’t expect to kick back and sip some lemonade for this is not his goal. Get yer dancing shoes on and loosen up that neck because heads shall be banging. After listening to this mixtape I can safely say I am ready to unsafely devour this weekend. Check it. #untz/tom

Today’s Untz: DRVGS / DVBBS & River Runs Dry / Gladkill

We’re on our way back from a hot and relaxing weekend in Florida. The hot sun jetting out its sweet, sweet Vitamin D can sure do a number on your soul. It feels great to have gotten out of the city, but I’m excited to return. Since I missed Friday’s untz I’m going to post two tracks today.

The first is a chilled out melodic remix of a DVBBS track from my buddy VOODOO FARM. Liam Dirlam, the mastermind behind this musical project, normally puts out tracks that bang pretty hard. This one certainly does just in a different way than what we’ve come accustomed to. I’m hoping we get to see this side of VOODOO Farm more. Having seen his productions skills evolve over the years, I know he’s capable of dominating any musical genre. It’s been fun to watch. Keep an eye out for some more remixes and an original album dropping in the future. The Future is bright for VOODOO FARM.

The second track is from Gladkill. He produced it a few months back and decided he wanted to share something new. It certainly is in the same chillstep, luvstep, whateverstep as the VOODOO FARM one. This song has a warped ninja dojo vibe to it. Dig it. tom/untz

Today’s Indie: Turning Page / Sleeping at Last

‘if I had only seen how you smile when you blush / or how you curl your lip when you concentrate enough’

A sleepy happy love song because it is Friday and beautiful out with even warmer weather ahead and this city is filled with people in good spirits opening doors for one another, smiling, and saying hello… the kind of energy you can soak in.

I have liked this song for a while now but felt conflicted about sharing it because I discovered it via a Twilight movie (hey it was a rainy Thanksgiving break back in Oregon and my sister needed company). Ultimately though, good music is good music, and this is a gem of a song about the kind of love  you want to shout about across mountains (or in the movie’s case, across species and generations). Wheaton, Illinois’ Sleeping at Last’s Ryan O’Neal wrote the song exclusively for the film. Obviously Team Edward. #indie/tory

Today’s Untz: Brazilian Rhyme / Earth Wind & Fire (Vodoo Farm Dubstep remix)

So today’s tune is aggressive and that’s the way it’s supposed to be. Voodoo Farm and I go way back. From a lead singer/rapper of a funk band, Stealing From Bandits, to a freaky dubstep producer, my buddy Liam Dirlam has done it all. He’s been making splashes back east, but beware west coast… he’s coming for you.

so i made this jam as a request from a friend for a film project we are working on… i actually wasn’t suppose to release it to the public, but our communication got screwed up and i got a few angry calls the next day.  so its out, its free, im making a whole new remix for my boy, and the world has another strange piece of music to jam out to or get angry at.  it’s funny how people get protective over older music and say stuff like “how DARE you remix the beatles or jim morrison!” what people dont understand is that the same artists who inspire you to listen to new music are the same ones who inspire me to make it. peace, love and turtledoves mafugga” #untz/tom
