hold on

Today’s Untz: Hold on Feat. Sampha (Burnksi Desert Edit) / SBTRKT

Ahhh TUATI has been without some untz for about two weeks now so I’m happy to not only be back, but back with a hot tune. ‘Hold On’ was a standout on SBTRK’s album released earlier this year, but it’s been given some pep by Berlin based producer, Burnski.

‘In a day and age where the definition of ‘house’ is constantly being re-conceptualised, a new breed of young-blood producers step forward bringing with them a deep and groove-laden sound building on classic timbers. At the forefront we find Burnski. Deftly abridging vintage Detroit and Chicago, always infused with the unmistakeable Burnski charm, he is moving dancefloors all over the world.’

I’m glad to be back sharing music after a joyous time abroad. Enjoy this massive edit. #untz/tom

dimensions festival

31 Aug

Note: I’m headed out of the country tomorrow to ultimately end up in Pula, Croatia (pictured above) for Dimensions Festival. So with that said, I will be gone two weeks. “With a higher technical specification of sound systems than you will find at any other festival of its size, Dimensions is the perfect place to enjoy the deep end of electronica, the best in techno, house, deep dubstep, drum & bass and other electronic sounds.”

Here are some of the musical highlights I’m looking forward to:

Today’s Untz: Dimensions

Blawan – Getting Me Down

Gold Panda – Marriage

Four Tet – Pyramid

John Talabot – Destiny

Finnebassen – Monday (Finnebassen Remake)

Todd Terje – Inspector Norse

peanut butter

Today’s Untz: Peanut Butter (Moon Boots Remix) / Alison Valentine

Fellow space cadet Moon Boots had this to say about this track: “Back in June when Perseus and Jonas Rathsman and I played Wanderlust in Paris, we met Alison Valentine, a singer and flower girl from NYC. I’ll never forget that she brought flowers to the show… She brought me flowers, I made her a remix…”

I’d say that’s a pretty sweet deal. The original actually thumps pretty hard along side some heavily tweaked lyrics. It had a more natural sounding bass line whereas the remix is more electronic. I am loving the Moon Boots bass grooves and it must be heard of a some serious speakers to really appreciate it.

Moon Boots takes this remix to a much dreamier soundscape. It’s a casual bass driven and piano backed end of the summer jam. You can’t help but feel at ease while listening to this. #untz/tom

blindspot

Today’s Untz: Blindspot (Maribou State Remix) / Submotion Orchestra

I had heard this last week through Submotion Orchestra’s main attraction… lead singer Ruby Wood. She has such a seductive and sultry voice.

Submotion Orchestra is 7 piece band from London. Drawing upon dubstep, soul, ambient electronica, jazz and dub, their unique music is at once delicate and heavy, spacious and dense, highly atmospheric but firmly rooted. It’s truly a melting pot of sounds which makes them a perfect fit for a Maribou State remix.

This remix is also a melting pot of sounds… 1 part house, 1 part UK bass, and 1 part straight downtempo awesome weirdness. Enjoy it’s eclectic nature. #untz / tom

Love Me Tonight

Today’s Untz: Love Me Tonight / Cosmonauts

Get your love on groove sharks. I’m headed out to to bask in the California Sunshine. If ya feel me then you’ll feel this tune. Enjoy the free download while it lasts.  #untz/tom

cruel summer

22 Aug

Today’s Untz: Cruel Summer (Three Piece Suit Siesta Dub) / Ace of Base

As a child of the 80’s that was old enough to hear Ace of Base in the 90’s it’s hard to at least not give a listen to an Ace of Base remix. Most are underwhelming and cheesy, but alas, I found one I dig… pleasant listening indeed.

“They say the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Unless that apple is Three Piece Suit.

Born to a family of fifth-generation goat farmers deep in the Andes, Three Piece Suit left a life relegated to serving the lactose-intolerant masses in order to follow his calling as a modern day musical alchemist.

A spinner of sound; a weaver of webs; a gentleman and scoundrel. Get your suit on. It’s business time.” #untz/tom

the sky

20 Aug

Today’s Untz: The Sky / Matt Zo feat Linnea Schosso

‘At 21 years of age, Mat Zo is living the dream – part of a new breed of precocious, unrestricted DJ/producers that are making big noises without the one-dimensional genre blinkers of old.

As he works busily behind the scenes on his debut artist album for Anjunabeats, Zo’s kaleidoscopic creativity is set to be unleashed in full force. With everything from French house to rock-riddled, funk-fuelled electro and hip-hop vibes already planned for the album, Zo’s genre-wrecking visions are set to be realised in the most explosive manner imaginable.’ #untz/tom

a rainbow

Today’s Untz: A Rainbow / Up Until Now

Jay Murphy, David’s younger brother (David being aka Murph – bassist/bass bomber of STS9), played an immensely enjoyable and highly dance-able set at ReGeneration (06/25/11). I am not sure how many times they played together, but they were having so must fun up there together and were smiling ear to ear. This was shortly after David had gotten his cancer all-clear and they both were loving life and it showed through the music.

Up Until Now is mostly Jay’s production with live contributions from his older brother (and probably some helpful studio feedback), and he sometimes uses a studio drummer. It looks like Jon “The Barber” Gutwillig from the Disco Biscuits is going to join them on guitar for a couple of dates in the NE soon.
At any rate- here’s the bandcamp link for free downloads including the whole ReGen set:  http://upuntilnow.bandcamp.com/   Website:  http://upuntilnowmusic.com

catch

15 Aug

Today’s Untz: Catch/ The Egg

The Egg are a band well known to festival audiences, having played many UK festivals including Glastonbury and The Big Chill as well as Rustlers Valley (South Africa) and also in Holland, Switzerland (Montreux Jazz), France, Turkey and Ibiza. They also did a stint here in the US back in 2008 when I was lucky enough to catch them 3 times. Once in Baltimore, once in Chicago, and once at Camp Bisco in upstate New York.

Recently the band’s third album ‘Forwards’ has seen a more reflective slower sound, but also in places heavier and rockier than anything before. Also more of a psychedelic warmth holding different eclectic influences together. However, live, the band have kept their full on dance and festival style fully intact, with a full interactive film and video synchronised show. This is a track I’ve seen live that will be on their upcoming album ‘Something To Do.’ I can’t wait! Here’s to hoping a US tour follows! #untz/tom

knew you well

14 Aug

Today’s Untz: Knew You Well (Eight Bit Tiger Remix) / Cultfever

Eight Bit Tiger is an electronic dance duo from Chicago composed of the Widman brothers, Erik and Kent. The experiment began 15 years ago when the brothers started playing music together in a bedroom in northern Sweden and has mutated into a radioactive sonic isotope. Eight Bit Tiger is a new side project from their indie rock band Love in October.

“We have been gravitating to making dance music the past year and we wanted to get a fresh start with a new sound, so it made sense to us to start a new project”

Most of their music I’ve listened to is heavily influenced by 80’s style synths with a touch of some 70’s funk. I’ve liked most of what I’ve heard. This new remix certainly has a reggae vibe to it that I’m loving. It adds a harder yet summery feel to the original which is great too. Tory wrote about the original back in October before I started contributing although you can see my influence starting to creep in. #untz/tom

Let’s pretend that we are on a space ship
And I was given just one lowly envelope.
And we intuit what this guide will make us
As a rule we know we’re never going home.
