Today’s Indie: I was Wrong / The Oh Hellos

The Valley / The Oh Hellos

I found the lovely The Oh Hellos via Bandcamp  today and have spent the better half of the morning listening to their debut full-length album, Through the Deep Dark Valley, released last October. Maggie and Tyler Heath are a brother/sister outfit a la Angus and Julia Stone, hailing from Texas. The siblings have a co-ed Mumford and Sons feel to their sound with lots of banjo, soaring choruses and foot stomping beats, and each track is heart stirring with the highest highs and the lowest lows. Emerging music at its finest. #indie/tory

Today’s Indie: A Violet Sky / Apparat

Germany’s Apparat, aka Sacsha Ring, has released the first track off of his upcoming release, Krieg und Frieden (Music for Theater). He composed the album based on Sebastian Hartmann’s theater production of Tolstoy’s War and Peace, proving electronic artists everywhere can have brains beyond the beats. A Violent Sky is a beautiful, sprawling opus of fingers slipping across keys and slow moving, somber vocals, and it definitely has a cinematic pull to it to draw you in.

The  new record will be out next month on Mute, and Apparat had the following to say about it: “i made a record and i’m quite proud of it. It’s the first record ever that didn’t hurt at some point. It’s full of imperfection because it was made by humans… Krieg und Frieden is the theatre soundtrack i wrote last year. We went to the studio and made a bit of a weird record with not many beats and lots of drones. I hope you like it.”

Today’s Indie: Clair De Lune / Flight Facilities ft. Christine Hoberg

‘don’t go / tell me that the lights won’t change / tell me that it will stay the same’

A stretching of strings leads into Clair De Lune, met with distant echoed vocals slowly making their way closer, pulling you further into the track until you get lost.  Flight Facilities’ Clair De Lune was one of the standout tracks that came out while we were in Asia in November, and I am finally catching up with a belated but loving post.

The track is more mellow and bedroom bound than the Australians’ usual antics, and I am loving this revelation of their softer side, especially with the silvery vocals etched throughout. The collaboration proves again that the duo is really good at partnering with killer songstresses – Christine Hoberg sounds right up there with Crave You’s Gisselle. #indie/tory

Today’s Indie: Perfectly Aligned / Milo Greene

What’s the Matter / Milo Greene

LA quintet Milo Greene was one of my favorite finds of 2012, so I was super stoked to see more of their tracks from their debut album up for sharing on SoundCloud. With delicious simplicity, arcing harmonies, catching piano riffs and whispery vocals, these are the kind of tracks that I want as the soundtrack for my winter days and nights. #indie/tory

Today’s Indie: How Do You Ruin Me / Black Prairie

‘in the way that you gave it all / in the way that you took it back’

I still have a lot of music to catch up on after my trip but my annual Christmas call to my Uncle Carl out in Seattle has sent me in the right direction with a tip off to check out Portland bluegrass group Black Prairie. Black Prairie is comprised of a trio of The Decembrists who spun off and joined a couple friends to create their own sound back in 2010. How Do You Ruin Me is off their sophomore album out last September, A Tear In The Eye Is A Wound In The Heart, and the track’s instruments of an earlier era, steadily flowing beat and hushed, beautiful female vocals echoing the devastation rendered from unrequited love have immediately pulled me in. I am now devouring the rest of the band’s songs – which I highly recommend. #indie/tory

Today’s Indie: Weak Knees / Miss Bee

‘when I look into your eyes / I feel like falling’

Well, we have been back from our travels in SE Asia for almost a week now and due to severe jet lag, a lack of structure in my day to day and serious mourning over the end of our six weeks of adventure I have been lax at getting back to my blogging duties and catching up on the myriad of wonderful music we have missed.

Luckily my other half gave me the nudge to get started again today by sharing this track from Miss Bee, produced by Tigers on a Leash. Sleepy, morning dazed vocals met with a Caribbean vibe, smooth beats and a catchy chorus. I’m back. #indie/tory

Lovin’

5 Nov

Well friends, it is time to bid a happy temporary adieu. Tom and I quit our day jobs and are heading off to SE Asia for the next six weeks, starting in Vietnam and then making our way through Laos and Thailand. While we might pop a track or two up along the way, you likely wont be hearing much from us until mid December. In the meantime check out some of the great blogs we love listed over on the right.

Today’s Indie: Lovin’ / Millionyoung

Here is a smooth send off track from Florida chillwave artist MillonYoung that bottles up the sounds of the tropical beaches and lush jungles we are heading into. The track is off his upcoming album, Variable, out February 12th. Something to sway and sip to….  enjoy and be well. #indie/tory

so good to me

Today’s Indie: So Good to Me / Chris Malinchak

NY based Chris Malinchak has crafted the musical version of a perfect glass of red wine, classic mac’n’cheese or a warm blanket for two on a chilly Fall day — comfort music at its finest, warm enough to melt even the harshest of Monday blues and ease the wildest of  Frankenstorm winds and woes. While we only hear of such things from afar here in San Francisco, thoughts to all to be safe on the other coast and to take it easy out there. So Good to Me has definitely taken the internet world by storm (couldn’t resist) with over 77.000 listens on Soundcloud in under a week. It is a gorgeous song with the reminder to be thankful to the ones that are so good to us in this life. Amen to that. #indie/tory

Quick plug! Musically inclined folk in the Bay Area should definitely check out tonight’s Soundcloud MeetUp for stem swapping and production tips at PARISOMA at 6:30p, hosted by my dear friend Nicole. Details here.

Today’s Indie: Latch / Disclosure ft. Sam Smith

‘if there are boundaries I will try and knock them down / I’m latching on babe now I know what I have found’

The rain has cleared, the Giants are heading into game 1 of the World Series only a few blocks away, and we are over halfway through the workweek leading into Halloween weekend. Here is some feel good music to go along with the good vibrations from Disclosure, a duo of young brothers from South London. The auditory appeal of this song is undeniable, and it pretty hard not to crack a smile/reach out to latch on to your own someone when you hear it.

If you want some eye bliss to go along with this ear bliss, go no further than the official video, which is filled with good looking people having a good time.

Today’s Indie: The Ballad / New Look

‘this is the part when everybody says they love you so’

The end of the day has caught up with me, so today’s post will be brief but with love. My co-conspirator sent me this track this morning saying “old song, but I feel like you’d love this.”  He knows me well. This is the first I have heard of them, but New Look a husband and wife outfit from Canada who have toured with the likes of The xx. Getting that vibe now, and hitting repeat.

Also, go Giants! #indie/tory
