look at where we are

Today’s Indie: Look At Where We Are / Hot Chip

‘look at where we are / remember where we started out’

When this track comes on the car stereo my knee instinctively braces itself for a hand to be rested on it; it is the perfect simple reminder  to take in the person next to you, appreciate what has happened to get you there together, and to look forward to whatever lies ahead. The song is Hot Chip’s new album’s signature smoldering slow jam a la One Life Stand’s I Feel Better. Love.  #indie / tory

anoraak

Today’s Untz: Made Up / Anoraak

Anoraak has been a favorite of mine for sometime now when it comes to “that sound.” I don’t want to pigeon hole him into chillwave so screw the genre’s in this particular case (or always) since it’s a smorgasbord of stylings anyways. From italo disco, to Motown-schooled funk, and sepia-toned pop music, Anoraak has a unique sound that fits right in line with that SoCal mentality despite the fact that he’s from France.

The track above, ‘Made Up’, is an unreleased track made available via youtube for Anoraak’s upcoming US tour. I will be sure to check it out August 4th here in San Francisco. Anoraak was so kind to have also release a remix from Les Loups. It’s a bit glitchier than the original but it mostly stays true. #untz/tom

fifteen in the sierras

5 Jul

Today’s Untz: Fifteen (Rotkraft Remix) / Goldroom

Goldroom’s ‘Fifteen’ has been out for sometime, but after hearing this version/seeing this video I wanted to feature it. I mean it’s summer and there’s love in the air. Breathe it in and enjoy your short time on this earth.

I’m headed to High Sierra Music Festival this weekend up in Quincy, CA so hopefully I’ll have some fun updates from there when I get back. I listen to all types of music from bluegrass to intergalactic unicorn disco, but as far as electronic related music, I’m pumped for STS9, Lotus, and Papadosio. I’ve seen everyone, but Papadosio. Have a safe weekend TUATI readers! #untz/tom

first aid kit

Today’s Indie: Emmylou / First Aid Kit

‘no, I’m not asking much of you / just sing little darling, sing with me’

My co-contributor and other half has jokingly said we need to change our blog name to the Untz and the Folk instead of The Untz and the Indie given my recent banjo loving stringing spree, and while I laughed I can’t help but shake that this isn’t just a phase… I am totally digging the genre right now, serving as the perfect music to soak my summer in with.

Today’s treat is from Swedish sirens/sisters Johanna and Klara Soderberg, who collectively make up First Aid Kit. The duo released their sophomore album, The Lion’s Roar, this past January, and by the sound of it you would think they were coming to us by way of Tennessee instead of Stockholm. The track traces the great romantic duos in country music history, and while sibling intuition rings true in their beauitful harmonies, Emmylou has the the songbirds pleading for their own romantic counterparts to sing through life with. A delightful piece to leave you with as we head into the mountains for the next few days for High Sierra… we will be back next week! #indie / tory

Today’s Untz: Headphones (Moon Boots Remix) / Little Boots

Hop on this free remix today before it’s gone. Moon Boots, in typical fashion, takes a fine indie track from Little Boots and transforms it into a carefree dance tune. One that would be perfect for almost any moment whether that be in the club or on the beach.

I’ve been traveling for the last 12 hours so I’m short for words. Even with my brain relatively fried, I’ve got a sudden burst of positive energy thanks to the booootss. #untz/tom

longevity

2 Jul

Today’s Indie: Longevity / Yeasayer

‘live in the moment / never count on longevity / please’

It is going to be a weird week. Tuesday becomes a mini-Friday with Wednesday off for the Forth of July and then Thursday becomes an unlikely Monday and Friday at the same time since we are taking the 6th off to head up into the mountains for the High Sierra Fest. It is going to be hard to focus through any of it, especially with the anticipation of a festival at hand, but music always helps.

Today the boys of Yeasayer remind us that life is short with their single, Longevity, off their upcoming album Fragrant World due out this August. With transfixing vocals and a chorus that pulls you right in, it is the perfect way to ease into the week. #indie / tory

all summer long

29 Jun

Today’s Indie: Summerlong / Xylos

‘we can make it like we did all summer long / in the shade while the others all sang along’

This feels good. Brooklyn quintet Xylos presents the perfect summer anthem to stir sweet restlessness into our bones on a Friday afternoon in late June, with fresh vocals and a catching chorus met with blissful synth. While the season no longer grants the months of freedom it did when we were young, it still promises hours outdoors, cold beer, adventure and summer love. Living in a city known for its particularly grey and foggy stretches this time of year still can’t bring me down, especially with a song like this as a backdrop. It glows. #indie / tory

one more time

29 Jun

Today’s Untz: One More Time (Dis:Aux Edit) / Daft Punk

Hey ya’ll I’m the East Coast and almost forgot to post a track… on a Friday?!?! Tha Fu*k? Sooo I’ll just post the jam I’m currently listening to.

A little Daft Punk with some Kurtis Blow? Yes Please! This has the untz and it has the funk. These are a few of my favorite things. #untz/tom

mirror ball

27 Jun

Today’s Untz: Mirror Ball (Cosmonaut’s Ego Trippin Dub) / Auxiliary Tha Masterfader

Today’s track is stuck somewhere in between the world of Tron and the picture above. It’s made for the dancefloor. This isn’t the kind of track  you want to throw on to early. Wait for it…. wait for it… Hit em with it.

Of course the Cosmonauts have been firmly making their mark on the intergalactic disco scene for quite some time. Their music flips the boundary between tripped out house, italo disco, balearica and electronic cosmic synth. It’s fairly obvious this tune fits the bill.#untz/tom

elephant revival

Today’s Indie: Sing to the Mountain / Elephant Revival

‘let the fires burn tonight / let the jugs of wine get drunk’

Ring Around the Moon / Elephant Revival

‘and I can hear it in the wind / hear it rise and descend’

The beginning of summer has left me flushed with folk fever, and I am currently sweating over my newest obsession, Elephant Revival, a porch-ready quintet from Colorado that I discovered amidst cheap wine and good conversation with friends Friday evening.

The slow burning duet on Ring Around the Moon  has me pining for yesteryear a la The Civil Wars, while Sing to the Mountain has more of a Trampled by Turtles kick to it, with sliding strings, banjo strums and hum along harmonies. Feel good music at its finest, oh the simple things in life. #indie / tory
