Today’s Indie: Only the Horses / Scissor Sisters

‘and if this is the end / the best place I’ve ever been’

Scissor Sisters have fallen off my radar for a while now, but instantly grabbed my attention with this new single off their upcoming album, Magic Hour. There is a bit of untz in today’s indie because the track is traceably produced by Calvin Harris with some help from Boys Noize’s Alex Ridha. So cheery, so catchy, wild horses couldn’t keep me away. The perfect Monday morning fix. #indie/tory

Today’s Untz: Can’t Live Without Music / MAM

‘they can take my life, but they can’t take my pride/ they say music died, but they lied’

As I’m gearing up for Coachella this week, I think it makes sense that I post a song relevant to not just a festival, but to music in general. Music is art. Music is life. I can’t live without it and wouldn’t want to imagine a world without it.

MAM, which consists of producers Matt Hughes and Miguel Campbell, brings us today’s track appropriately titled, “Can’t Live Without Music.” I instantly am reminded of Daft Punk. The house and funk sounds in this sexy, funky tune remind me specifically of “Something About Us.” I don’t think there is much you can say after that comparison… the ultimate compliment. #untz/tom

reaching close

16 Jan

Today The Untz and the Emo turns one! Get out the champagne! Keeping the blog up for the last year has been a challenge, but a labor of love, and TUATE has come a long way since my very first post. Here’s to another year of dancing your face off, and chilling.

Today’s Emo: Feel So Close / Jenna Garcia (Calvin Harris remix)

‘and there’s no stopping us right now / I feel so close to you right now’

Sleepy Monday morning stripped down slow jam… Jenna Garcia takes Calvin Harris’ don’t stop moving Feel So Close and turns it into something to curl up into. I came across Jenna and this track via earmilk, where I was surprised to learn she is a seventeen year old who has never stepped into a recording studio but is doing the whole YouTube thing. Even though this song is extremely simple, I see a lot of promise here just like in another young cover songstress, Birdy. #emo

Today’s Untz: Reaching Out / Nero (Fred Falke remix)

‘reaching out / for something to hold’

The boyfriend has ditched tumblr and carried out a relaunch of his own blog, thetrashjuice.com. It is in a word celestial. Check it out, I am totally not biased. Today’s untz is pulled right from its opening week:

‘Fred Falke is a falkeing genius… sorry had to. He takes Nero’s mashup up of an old Kano tune + a Hall and Oats tune and turns a dubstep song into a french house masterpiece.  This is such an uplifting tune. Nero’s version isn’t bad, but I guarantee if you dropped both on the d floor, Fred Falke’s would send the crowd into a sweaty frenzy. Epic sunsets all around.’ #untz

so shake it

19 Sep

Epic weekend. Epic tunes. Short post.

Today’s Emo: Shake it Out / Florence + the Machine

‘but I like to keep some things to myself / I like to keep my issues strong / it’s always darkest before the dawn’

There’s my girl. Florence Welch is back after a shaky start with the release of What the Water Gave Me. This lead single from Halloween’s upcoming album, Ceremonials, is the stirring, magical, wake me up sound I expect from Florence + the Machine.

Perhaps it is a bit cliche to utilize the “it’s always darkest before dawn” adage, but it fits right into a track about choosing to finally shake off your demons, face the night, and move on into the morning. I know, I know… #emo

Today’s Untz: Feel So Close / Calvin Harris

Feel So Close / Calvin Harris

‘and there’s no stopping us right now’

The softer side of untz… it is really hard not to like this song. Calvin Harris needs no introduction, and his track is happiness, movement and cuddle inducing. Pleased to have. #untz

reeling home

15 Jul

I am packing into a minivan with six chicks after work this afternoon and making the three hour drive over to Yosemite where we will set up camp, hike, eat gourmet camp food (happen to have a chef amongst us) and lose ourselves in the dirt and pines for a couple of days. Work has been crazy the past few weeks, and I cannot think of a better way to retreat… even if I will be tugging along the laptop and mifi card. Bears beware, kittehs are in the woods.

Today’s Emo: Home (untitled) / Mumford & Sons

‘you went left and I went right / as the moon hung proud and white / you would of loved it here tonight’

A new sigh inducing melody from the crafters of Sigh No More, Mumford and Sons have me pining for home with this recording off their sophomore album due out late this year. I had the pleasure of seeing the English folk quartet at Coachella in April and was floored by their poise, presence and talent, feeling warm, fuzzy and inspired as they played out track after track during nightfall of the second day.

From the opening strums of banjo to Marcus Mumford’s aching vocals, the song quietly unfolds a tale of longing and regret. Delightfully tragic, beautifully nostalgic – a few listens and I find myself wanting to hop onto Kayak to find the next flight home to Oregon to curl up with my parents and my dog. Alas, the real world… a phone call will have to suffice for now. I’ll be home in a little while. #emo

Today’s Untz: The Reeling / Passion Pit (Calvin Harris remix)

‘now I pray that somebody will quickly come and kidnap me’

I have heard this song a million times, but never like this. Calvin Harris provides the perfect Friday mix to unravel for the weekend and get lost in the woods with. PP is in studio, gearing to release a new album early next year to follow Manners. About time! #untz

stay close and hold me

18 Apr

So Coachella happened. And it exceeded the highest of expectations on all counts. I was tireder, happier, crazier, and loved my friends more than I imagined possible. I cried during The National’s performance of Terrible Love at sunset and had to calm myself so I didn’t hyperventilate during the Twelve’s set while dancing my face off in reckless abandon in bright 2 pm 90 degree sunlight. It was truly a beautiful weekend that embodied all of me that is both untz and emo.

Even though I averaged 4 hours of sleep a night thanks to campground parties til the wee hours of the morning followed by a very glaring wake up call at 7 with the sun, I feel invigorated. We drove through Sunday night, I drifted into a coma from 5-11 this morning and have been watching my favorite sets and all that I missed on YouTube since. Today’s post features a couple songs from of an endless list of highlights from the weekend. Back to real life tomorrow.

Todays Emo: Stay Close / Delorean

‘I could never stand not being closer

Started day 3 of Coachella with Delorean’s set. They opened with their single Stay Close, and it was the perfect way to start the day, shake off sleepiness, settle into the couple beers I had with breakfast and soak some energy back up.

Delorean is an indie pop quartet from the Basque Country who have been together since 2000, but this is the first I have caught of them. The group was so happy to be there and I loved watching them show it, even though the lead singer’s teeth are distractingly terrible. From open to close the song itself pours out happiness, with cooing female echos chopped into layers of dreamy synth and steady beats. If you need any further reason to lose yourself in the glow, watch a few minutes of the song’s splashes of summer music video. #emo

Today’s Untz: You Used to Hold Me (Laidback Luke remix) / Calvin Harris

‘knocked down with everything I tried to do / that sounds something like me holding you’

It was a weekend of artists being playful and sampling a lot of their comrade’s work, so while Calvin didn’t come lay his original version of this track out, Luke nailed it Saturday evening a little before sundown in the Sahara tent. Epic lights, epic energy, Luke sliced in a bit of Robyn’s Indestructible before slipping seamlessly into his remix of You Used to Hold Me. Not the best sound quality but you can get a good feel for the experience here. Also funny people start booing at the end of this clip when LBL starts a mix of Viva La Vida. Coachella untzers were simply NOT down with Coldplay. #untz
