Today’s Untz: Space Jam / Melé

Yea I’m just gonna go ahead and say any track titled Space Jam has an unfair advantage in getting me to like it. Although it could be titled horse piss and I’d still be all over this one. A righteously massive track from Melé.

From his SC:

Tipped as one of Timeout Magazine’s ‘DJ Stars Of 2012’, the hype surrounding Liverpool’s own Melé keeps on growing. At just 20, he is already recognised as a promising producer with a series of releases that have got both artists and critics hungry for more.

With a unique sound, Melé is capable of delivering on every level – from club music to deeper productions interspersed with, hip-hop snares, grimey synths at techno tempo it’s Melé’s rhythmic inventiveness, and virtuoso touches that really set him apart. #untz/tom

Today’s Untz: September (Punks Jump Up Remix) / St. Lucia

Today we have an appropriately titled track for this month. St. Lucia has been heavily featured on here with some of their originals as well as their remixes. This time Punk Jump Up flips an already great tune into a latin flavored house anthem with some elements of deep disco.

What I’ve loved thus far about St. Lucia is that both their original and remixed tracks hold up so well on their own. Today though, the focus should be on the booty shaking remix because it’s infectious grooves have got me bouncing in my seat like a freak.

Joe & David (Punks Jump Up) love the cutting edge of punk & alternative culture but have never shied from a good melody. They feel just as home in pop music as in dance music, hence their love of remixing indie & pop songs & turning them into dance floor gems.

‘Punks Jump Up started in 2004 by putting on parties in east London for proto hipsters, fashion suspects & weirdos in general. The ‘anything goes’ policy typical of the area & zeitgeist summed up Joe & David’s taste & musical outlook & this has followed them into the life of producing music & creating the visual aspect of the PJU universe.’ #untz/tom

nightmares

Today’s Untz: Nightmares (Monitor 66 Remix) / Emeron & Fox

I highlighted Monitor 66’s Keith Sweat induced track some time ago here on TUATI. It was definitely a music highlight for me. I’d still put it in my top 50 of 2012. It certainly blew up with some attention from The Magician. It actually was just officially released a few weeks ago so if you haven’t heard it yet go check it out.

I just happened to come across a new remix of theirs today. It is absolutely stellar. It’s the kinda track that reminds me of those feel good moments driving down the road with the windows down. There’s not a care in the world when you have epically smooth bass lines, perfect accompanying synths, and beautiful vocals guiding you along.

The original itself if quite enjoyable, but Monitor 66 extends it out, turning it into an ethereal anthem. #untx/tom

fall cleaning

21 Sep

I spent the better part of yesterday deep cleaning my music collection, rustling through hundreds of un-played tracks in my iTunes to find those worthy of migration over to a new computer. There was a lot to get through, including ample Britney, Matchbox 20, Coldplay, and a surprising amount of country music collecting dust from my high school days back in Oregon. But nestled amidst the cobwebs surrounding Dashboard Confessional and  Tim McGraw were some amazing indie songs I had nearly forgotten about. This inspired today’s Spring Fall Cleaning Collection of old gems from an earlier life. They may not be new, but they may be new to you! Happy friday. #indie/tory

Homeboy / Adorable

‘and I want to hold you up for all to see / I want to cut you up I want to watch you bleed’

Song Beneath the Song / Maria Taylor

‘and it’s not a love, not a love, not a love song’

The Way our Chemicals Collide / Cloud Cult

‘oh god its beautiful, insatiable / the way our chemicals collide’

Day Job / Jeremy Messersmith

‘she’s in love with broken glass mountains / and fire place cafes’

hold on

17 Sep

Today’s Untz: Hold on Feat. Sampha (Burnksi Desert Edit) / SBTRKT

Ahhh TUATI has been without some untz for about two weeks now so I’m happy to not only be back, but back with a hot tune. ‘Hold On’ was a standout on SBTRK’s album released earlier this year, but it’s been given some pep by Berlin based producer, Burnski.

‘In a day and age where the definition of ‘house’ is constantly being re-conceptualised, a new breed of young-blood producers step forward bringing with them a deep and groove-laden sound building on classic timbers. At the forefront we find Burnski. Deftly abridging vintage Detroit and Chicago, always infused with the unmistakeable Burnski charm, he is moving dancefloors all over the world.’

I’m glad to be back sharing music after a joyous time abroad. Enjoy this massive edit. #untz/tom

sure thing

Today’s Indie: Sure Thing / Trails and Ways

‘even when the sky is fallin’ / even when the sun don’t shine / I got faith in you and I / so put your pretty hand in mine’

Oakland trio Trails and Ways has grabbed my attention yet again this summer, this time with a cover of Miguel’s Sure Thing. Their sexy duet feels like a classic 90’s lower the lights slow jam met with an indie twist, and laced with clever lyrical divergence (listen carefully).

Sure Thing has me hitting repeat just like with their cover of Miracle and original track, Nunca, and I can’t wait to catch these locals live. Happy Monday.  #indie/tory

dimensions festival

31 Aug

Note: I’m headed out of the country tomorrow to ultimately end up in Pula, Croatia (pictured above) for Dimensions Festival. So with that said, I will be gone two weeks. “With a higher technical specification of sound systems than you will find at any other festival of its size, Dimensions is the perfect place to enjoy the deep end of electronica, the best in techno, house, deep dubstep, drum & bass and other electronic sounds.”

Here are some of the musical highlights I’m looking forward to:

Today’s Untz: Dimensions

Blawan – Getting Me Down

Gold Panda – Marriage

Four Tet – Pyramid

John Talabot – Destiny

Finnebassen – Monday (Finnebassen Remake)

Todd Terje – Inspector Norse

peanut butter

29 Aug

Today’s Untz: Peanut Butter (Moon Boots Remix) / Alison Valentine

Fellow space cadet Moon Boots had this to say about this track: “Back in June when Perseus and Jonas Rathsman and I played Wanderlust in Paris, we met Alison Valentine, a singer and flower girl from NYC. I’ll never forget that she brought flowers to the show… She brought me flowers, I made her a remix…”

I’d say that’s a pretty sweet deal. The original actually thumps pretty hard along side some heavily tweaked lyrics. It had a more natural sounding bass line whereas the remix is more electronic. I am loving the Moon Boots bass grooves and it must be heard of a some serious speakers to really appreciate it.

Moon Boots takes this remix to a much dreamier soundscape. It’s a casual bass driven and piano backed end of the summer jam. You can’t help but feel at ease while listening to this. #untz/tom

blindspot

27 Aug

Today’s Untz: Blindspot (Maribou State Remix) / Submotion Orchestra

I had heard this last week through Submotion Orchestra’s main attraction… lead singer Ruby Wood. She has such a seductive and sultry voice.

Submotion Orchestra is 7 piece band from London. Drawing upon dubstep, soul, ambient electronica, jazz and dub, their unique music is at once delicate and heavy, spacious and dense, highly atmospheric but firmly rooted. It’s truly a melting pot of sounds which makes them a perfect fit for a Maribou State remix.

This remix is also a melting pot of sounds… 1 part house, 1 part UK bass, and 1 part straight downtempo awesome weirdness. Enjoy it’s eclectic nature. #untz / tom

Love Me Tonight

Today’s Untz: Love Me Tonight / Cosmonauts

Get your love on groove sharks. I’m headed out to to bask in the California Sunshine. If ya feel me then you’ll feel this tune. Enjoy the free download while it lasts.  #untz/tom
